The shift is inland. Not away from the sand, but away from the automatic drive east. The ViBe Creative District, the new Atlantic Park build-out beside it, and Virginia MOCA's relocation onto the Virginia Wesleyan campus have pulled fall weekends into a different orbit. The calendar below is not a roundup. It is a read on which weekends to commit to, which to route around, and where the good hours are hiding in between.
The one weekend that tells you everything
Look at September 25 through 27. The 52nd Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend takes over the boardwalk from 1st to 35th Street, running Friday noon to Sunday evening, with more than 200 artisans, two festival stages, Dock Dogs, Poseidon's Playground, the 8K, the Atlantic Regatta, and the International Sandsculpting Championship holding the beach through October 4. Taste of Virginia Beach lands on Sunday the 27th. And it is the last weekend before the MOCA Boardwalk Art Show marks its 70th year, October 9 through 11.
That is the fall in miniature. Three consecutive weekends of Oceanfront saturation, then a breath, then the Beard at the Beach food event on the 21st, then MOCA. If you have out-of-town family visiting, aim for the last September weekend and never look back. If you do not, this is the weekend to stay off Atlantic Avenue after 10 a.m.

The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art packed up more than seven decades at the Oceanfront and reopened on the Virginia Wesleyan University campus. The Monster Drawing Rally in August was the housewarming. The Boardwalk Art Show still returns to the sand in October because it is the boardwalk's show, but the museum's center of gravity now sits well inland.
Atlantic Park, opening next door to the ViBe with an entertainment venue and a surf lagoon, extends that inland pull. The city's own list of events expected to draw more than 10,000 people per day includes the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend, the Boardwalk Art Show, the Wicked 10K, and Holiday Lights at the Beach — every one of them a fall date. That is not a coincidence. Fall is the new peak.
The weekly rhythm that never makes the poster
The best fall weekends are the ones that do not appear on any city press release. VB Flea runs the third Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a night market the first Friday, 6 to 10 p.m., at 607 19th Street. The Old Beach Farmers Market and Old Beach Art & Eco Market hold their usual Saturday spots. Second Saturday brings a free walking art tour through the ViBe with a guide who actually knows the murals. First Friday is when the district feels most like itself.
If you have not been over in a while, the openings are worth the drive. Sleepy Cowgirl Coffee moved into its first brick-and-mortar at La Promenade in Hilltop, which means the pour-over run no longer requires a trip to Norfolk. The Lucky Penny opened near Oceana with pool tables, live music, and a menu leaning hard into the 250th, including smashburgers and fried chicken sandwiches named after presidents. Biscuits & Bird has signage up at 3342 Virginia Beach Boulevard, the old Hardee's at Celebration Station, from the Boddie-Noell team.
None of those are boardwalk businesses. They are neighborhood businesses. That is the point.
The muscle memory says drive east for a good night out. Fall 2026 is asking you to point the car in a different direction.

It is the difference between hitting a barricade at 19th Street and knowing about it Thursday.
Second, download VB Go, the city's events and parking app, and know that HRT Route 34, the Oceanfront Connector, runs from Parks Avenue and 19th Street to Atlantic Avenue and 22nd Street via 19th, Birdneck, and Virginia Beach Boulevard. It hits the Convention Center, the Sports Center, the ViBe Creative District, and Atlantic Avenue between 17th and 22nd every 15 minutes, 8 a.m. to midnight, Saturday and Sunday. On a Neptune weekend, that route is the closest thing to a cheat code residents get.
What goes on the November calendar before you forget
The end of the season is quieter, and that is why locals keep it. The Wicked 10K on Halloween weekend is still one of the best-costumed races in the state. The Surf & Rescue Museum Pig & Oyster Fest on October 25 is worth a ticket before it sells out. VA Beach Jeep Fest returns November 6 through 8. And BayPort Credit Union Holiday Lights at the Beach lights the boardwalk from November 20 through December 31, best done on a Tuesday or Wednesday when the drive-through line moves.
